TEACHING… happiness, sadness, love, hate, compassion, tolerance, knowledge…. LIFE. Being an educator does not mean just reading, writing and arithmetic. It is a tremendous and rewarding responsibility we take on when we “teach”. Children are complex human beings and need to be heard. When they are in our possession they are not just learning they are “living”. For me, being an educator means helping to shape the child and make sure they have every opportunity to flourish while teaching them, providing strength, guidance and compassion. Being passionate about life allows me to be passionate about my chosen second career, teaching. I believe I bring to the classroom many valuable assets, my passion for teaching, my love of children, and my life experiences as a businesswoman and parent.
I began my career as an Education major specializing in communication disorders. Upon completion of my Masters degree I became part of a team of Audiologists who helped to develop the prototype for the High Risk Neonatal Intensive Care Hearing Screening Program at Broward General Medical Center. As my career developed I returned to complete my Doctorate and open a private practice in Broward County. I have provided hearing services to children and geriatrics for over 20 years but have always had a special desire to teach.
I have been provided the wonderful opportunity to be a part of the Deerfield Beach Middle School family. There is always the question; do reading and the skill of writing play a distinctive role in our lives? The answer, it seems to me, is demonstrably yes! We need to develop our sense of imagination through the use of the written word. Reading literature allows for the flow of this imagination and deals with the unknown, fact and fiction while teaching us that reading can take us places we can only imagine. I feel a sense of great responsibility and do not take lightly your confidence in my ability to foster imagination and provide the gift of knowledge to my students. I take on this task with love and enthusiasm while beginning each day knowing that I am helping to shape our next generation.
I am not defined by being a teacher. I am already defined by my past teachers, parents, and life experiences. I bring these qualities of knowledge, love, compassion and passion with me to the classroom where I believe I must help my students to define themselves, which will carry them throughout their lives.
